Kodak Brownie Special — Art Deco Blue Ensemble Box Camera, ca. 1930s

This Kodak Brownie box camera belongs to the celebrated colour-ensemble series introduced by Kodak from approximately 1929 onward, inspired by industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague's collaboration with the company. The concept was simple but commercially brilliant: matching coloured faceplate panels and body coverings transformed the humble box camera into a fashion accessory. This example sports a boldly geometric two-tone blue front panel — alternating cobalt blue and sky (cerulean) blue rectangular blocks separated by pale grey or white borders — a composition entirely in keeping with the Art Deco geometric aesthetic of the era. The blue-ringed lens mount and matching blue viewfinder surround and film-key accent confirm this is a coordinated factory ensemble rather than a later modification.

The body covering is a distinctive dark green, finished with a fine reptile-scale or pebble embossing, which was a hallmark of Kodak's ensemble bodies. The reverse shows the film-advance key (octagonal, blue-accented), red-window counter frame in blue, and a black shutter-release lever — all consistent with the No. 2 Brownie or similar 120-film format box cameras of the period. The carrying strap or its remnant is visible at the top. The overall format and scale suggest a 6×9 cm or 6×6 cm exposure on 120 (or possibly 116) roll film, consistent with Kodak Brownie production of this era.

Condition is consistent with approximately 90 years of age: the front panel retains excellent colour vibrancy with only minor edge wear and a small area of loss at the lower left corner; the green body covering shows light surface wear and minor scuffing consistent with use and storage. The lens element appears present and intact; the shutter and advance mechanism appear operable but have not been tested. No major structural damage, dents, or repairs are visible. A particularly eye-catching and displayable example of Kodak's Art Deco colour-ensemble programme.
