CHF 190.00
A fine quality bronze aquamanile ewer cast after a Renaissance original. The pear-shaped body stands on three lion paw feet and is surmounted by a bearded grotesque mascaron head forming the spout. A handle is attached to the rear. The body bears an engraved cartouche with the Latin inscription DEVS ET LVMEN ("God and Light") with a cross, dated MDLXXV (1575).
The piece is a later cast, likely produced around 1900 in the Historicist tradition, when Renaissance bronzes were widely reproduced for the decorative arts market. The casting quality is excellent, with a fine dark brown patina showing natural green oxidation in the recesses.
