A rare and iconic example of minimalist design, the Braun ABW 35 represents one of the most resolved expressions of the Braun design philosophy under the direction of Dieter Rams. Designed by Dietrich Lubs in 1988 and manufactured in Germany, this quartz wall clock remains a benchmark of functionalist industrial design.
With the ABW 35, Lubs devised a way for the clock to recede entirely into its surroundings by making the face primarily transparent — the numerals and hands appear to float over whatever surface the clock is mounted against. The rim is formed from an opaque tubular plastic that serves as a minimal frame for the clear face. Numerals are rendered in charcoal grey, combining the corresponding hours and minutes at the quarter-hour points.
A further point of technical distinction: the clockwork is positioned at the front of the dial, while the hands run behind it — an inversion of conventional clock construction that reinforces the object's visual depth and sense of precision.
